HISTORY OF SARANAC LAKE GOLF CLUB
by EVELYN TAYLOR MORGAN, 1981
The Women's Association of the Club has always been very active with fund raising to help with
the purchase of kitchen equipment, lockers, furniture as well as donation to the main treasury for fertilizer, new sewer system,
etc., but the Women's biggest project was financing entirely the paving of the driveways and parking lot in
1973 and 1974.
The women have also given us some delightful social events. Through the endeavors of Jeanne
Moreau in the early fifties, they sponsored two big band dances with Johnny Long and his Orchestra. Then came
Pee Wee Hunt and his Jazz Band. These events were held at the Hotel Saranac. Although these were not money makers,
they did a lot for the social life of the community.
But perhaps the most memorable event was the balmy, moonlit night the members and their guests
danced under the stars at the Golf Club. A wooden dance floor was placed on the lawn between the old clubhouse and the
putting green and music was furnished free of charge by one of the members, Ernest Chico-Relli, who brought his excellent
band from the Hotel Marcy. The price of admission was $1.65 per person. The Women were also very much involved
with the staging of the Buster Crabbe Rodeo, held one year at the athletic field of the Petrova School.
